Derbyshire Police investigating crime against the haulage sector have arrested eight people who were engaged in theft of loads at motorway service areas. The arrests came after work with Lincolnshire Police as part of the multi-force Operation Barric, supporting the industry. The RHA commends the police for this work, and for the collaborative approach which is so important in this area of work. More from This email address is being protected from spambots. Boosting the use of IT and telematics in the industry would boost UK productivity, improve air quality, reduce carbon use by lorries and reduce congestion, the RHA has told government. We are seeking further input from members as to how this can best be achieved. - See more at: https://www.rha.uk.net/news/2016-11-november/rha-messenger-30-november#sthash.php1rETf.dpuf

All HGV operators should be thoroughly audited the Road Haulage Association has told the government, in what would be a major change to the operator licensing system. Commenting, RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said: “We need to raise the bar for road haulage operators in the interests of road safety. It is almost 50 years since the current O-licensing system was introduced and it has served the industry well, overall. But trucks are larger and heavier, operations are more demanding and expectations of competence and compliance with regulations are much higher than in the past. “Mandatory auditing would flush out operators that should not have a licence. It would be a decisive step towards minimising road safety risks and it would be eliminate much unfair competition faced by the great majority of hauliers who are working within the rules. “We propose that new applicants be granted a provisional, or interim, licence, with confirmation subject to a satisfactory audit of the operation. At the moment, new licences are granted on the basis of promises on the application and without any inspection of the operating systems and procedures,” Richard Burnett concluded. The RHA also suggests that follow-up audits should take place every five years. “There is a lot of focus at present on looking at haulage firms that already operating to high standards,” said Richard Burnett. “The important issue for road safety – and fair competition - is to get to grips with those at the other end of the compliance spectrum. Auditing all operators achieves that, as well as validating the better firms.” - See more at: https://www.rha.uk.net/news/press-releases/2017-01-january/audit-all-hgv-operators-rha-tells-department-for#sthash.X4nzRae7.dpuf
